Woven Ceramics

Second Year Work, 2019

This project was inspired by the forms and techniques shown in the exhibition on traditional Japanese basket weaving in Paris. I began to experiment by weaving different materials and became fascinated by the textures and forms I was able to produce. The flexible and sometimes translucent qualities of weaving were in direct contrast to the hard characteristics of fired clay I had been investigating which inspired me to combine them and the results are in the vessels shown. The materials I used to weave were:

– Wood cane – to compliment the sandy glaze and highlight the organic earthy features.

– Metal and string – its movability being a complete contrast to ceramics.
